Book Talk: Reading and Writing

Friday 26 June 2015

(I've decided I want to try my hands at making graphic banners for my posts, such as the one above. Constructive criticism is much appreciated, but this is my very first attempt. I'm not very good at editing stuff and the spacing is off, but I'd like to hear your thoughts.)

Something that I've seen a lot of - and not just recently, it's been a pretty constant thing I've noticed over the years - is avid readers and bookworms with a penchant for creative writing, or dreams of becoming an author. I feel like it's almost become a necessity: if you enjoy reading you must enjoy writing. I, however, do not.

A rather funny thing for a blogger to say, but it's true. I'm not a huge fan of writing. In the past it used to be a hobby of mine, something I did for fun and loved at school. But as I entered my teens and secondary school and college demanded more and more written pieces of work, the enjoyment started to be sucked away.

I'm not very good at writing under pressure. I'm not very good at writing essays, or non-fiction pieces, or poetry, and I'm not very good at coming up with ideas and sticking to them. I struggle with sentence structure and variety, and endings are not my strong suit.

Why is it then, you (and I) ask, I decided to start a blog? Something that is nothing but writing. I'm not entirely sure of the answer myself, as in all honesty I struggle thinking up new and interesting posts on a weekly basis, and reviewing is not something I find pleasure in. Mainly, I like being able to talk about the things - books - that I enjoy and at least feel like someone is paying attention, even if no one is.

I have never wanted to be an author. I have only ever consistently found joy through reading. And if that makes me an odd or unusual bookworm, then so be it.

  1. Even though I am the opposite, I do see where you are coming from. It can be tedious thinking of ideas, particularly with essays and other assignments. As for your graphic, I think it looks good for your first attempt. I to struggle with editing, so I know how it feels to have to practice over and over. The thing that I find most helpful are Youtube tutorials, so I can follow along :)

    1. Essays became the bane of my existence this year. I can't even tell you how many I had to write in practice for my psychology exam. Thank you! I didn't even think of looking at Youtube tutorials, so I'll definitely do that next time. :)
