June Wrap Up/July TBR

Friday 30 June 2017

June saw the end of exams (and me deviating entirely from the TBR I set last month) so hopefully July will be the month for reading

TBR Feature #60

Wednesday 28 June 2017

TBR Feature is the chance for me to, every Wednesday, pick one of my unread books and discuss it: why I picked it up, when I'll get round to reading it, if I'm still interested in it at all etc.

Dolores Claiborne by Stephen King

Caligula by Suetonius

Monday 26 June 2017

'Because of his baldness and hairiness, he announced it was a capital offence for anyone either to look down on him as he passed or to mention goats in any context.'

The biography of the brutal, crazed and incestuous Roman Emperor Caligula, who tried to appoint his own horse consul.

How To Have a Movie Night

Friday 23 June 2017

I think we can all agree that, sometimes, a movie night is just what you need. The team at Pure Flix, a family-friendly video-streaming service, were interested to know how I create the perfect movie night, so of course I'm sharing my tips. And the best part is: Pure Flix are also offering a free one month trial for you to have your own movie night.

TBR Feature #59

TBR Feature is the chance for me to, every Wednesday, pick one of my unread books and discuss it: why I picked it up, when I'll get round to reading it, if I'm still interested in it at all etc.

An Unquiet Mind by Kay Redfield Jamison

Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon

Monday 19 June 2017

Madeline Whittier is allergic to the outside world. So allergic, in fact, that she has never left the house in all of her seventeen years. But when Olly moves in next door, and wants to talk to Maddie, tiny holes start to appear in the protective bubble her mother has built around her. Olly writes his IM address on a piece of paper, shows it at her window, and suddenly, a door opens. But does Maddie dare to step outside her comfort zone?

Everything, Everything is about the thrill and heartbreak that happens when we break out of our shell to do crazy, sometimes death-defying things for love.

Recommendations: Stephen King 2.0

Friday 16 June 2017

Blaze
If you're looking for fast-paced thriller that's also oddly heart-warming King - or rather Bachman - has you covered in Blaze. Following the eponymous hero, this little gem sets out on a journey of kidnap, grief, and learning to fend for oneself. You won't want to like Blaze, but by the end of the book you'll adore him.

Gerald's Game
Or perhaps you prefer your stories packed with flashbacks and hallucinations, with a side of gore, for good measure? Gerald's Game will compel you to continue reading even when you wish you'd never started it in the first place. Not for the faint of heart, or for those particularly sensitive to sex and any kind of abuse.

Cujo
Perhaps not the best read for any dog lovers out there, Cujo promises action and blood. Lots of blood. King takes the sweet St. Bernard and puts him in a situation that's terrifying thanks to its plausibility, something few horror writers seem to employ. There are no supernatural elements here - just good old rabies.

TBR Feature #58

Wednesday 14 June 2017

TBR Feature is the chance for me to, every Wednesday, pick one of my unread books and discuss it: why I picked it up, when I'll get round to reading it, if I'm still interested in it at all etc.

A Quiet Kind of Thunder by Sara Barnard

Jason and Medea by Apollonius of Rhodes

Monday 12 June 2017

'The Argonauts were terrified at the sight. But Jason planting his feet apart stood to receive them, as a reef in the sea confronts the tossing billows in a gale.'

The tragic, epic love affair that allowed Jason to get the Golden Fleece.

Compulsive Skin Picking 101

Friday 9 June 2017

Before passing judgement, please be aware that this is a very personal and sensitive topic for me. I can't help my mental health.

TBR Feature #57

Wednesday 7 June 2017

TBR Feature is the chance for me to, every Wednesday, pick one of my unread books and discuss it: why I picked it up, when I'll get round to reading it, if I'm still interested in it at all etc.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey

Stars Above by Marissa Meyer

Monday 5 June 2017

The enchantment continues....

The universe of the Lunar Chronicles holds stories—and secrets—that are wondrous, vicious, and romantic. How did Cinder first arrive in New Beijing? How did the brooding soldier Wolf transform from young man to killer? When did Princess Winter and the palace guard Jacin realise their destinies?

With nine stories—five of which have never before been published—and an exclusive never-before-seen excerpt from Marissa Meyer’s upcoming novel, Heartless, about the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland, Stars Above is essential for fans of the bestselling and beloved Lunar Chronicles.
