Districts of Panem Tag

Friday 4 December 2015

I saw this tag over at YA Bookaholic, and seeing as I'm a huge fan of The Hunger Games and I recently saw the second part of Mockingjay (which is amazing, might I add), I thought I'd give this tag a go.

District 1 - Luxury: Pick a book with lots of opulence
I feel like I had to pick The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins for this. There's no arguing that the Capitol is the height of opulence and luxury, despite it being a twisted society. It's further highlighted by the squalor the majority of the districts live in, and I found Katniss' fascination with all the food, fashion, and technology to be incredibly realistic.

District 2 - Masonry/Weaponry: Pick a book with a great war or conflict
As much as I'd like to pick A Song of Ice and Fire for this, I'm going to go with Half a King by Joe Abercrombie. There's definitely a lot of conflict and clashing of interests and ideas in this book, all of which sets up for a war in the sequels.

District 3 - Technology: Pick a book with a technological twist
Slated by Teri terry. I was fascinated by the levos - wristbands that monitor the mood of whoever's wearing them - when I read this. The whole concept of Slating, or wiping the memories of underage criminals, was an intriguing one for me. Even though I'm not a fan of science-fiction, I did enjoy the advanced technology throughout the trilogy.

District 4 - Fishing: Pick a water-based book
Deep Blue by Jennifer Donnelly. It's the first book in a series about mermaids, so it was a bit of a no brainer for this one.

District 5 - Electricity: Pick a powerful book
Bit of a cheat, seeing as it actually centres around electricity, but Revival by Stephen King. Despite it being directly linked to power, the story being told is gripping in it's own way. Definitely a must read if you're a fan of the King.

District 6 - Transportation: Pick a book that takes place in many locations
Fire & Flood and Salt & Stone by Victoria Scott. The Brimstone Bleed, the contest in which Tella must take part in to win a cure for her sick brother, takes place across four different environments: jungle, desert, ocean, and mountain.

District 7 - Lumber: Pick a book that involves manual labour
Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. When we're first introduced to Celaena she's a slave in the salt mines of Endovier. Needless to say the life of a slave is full of manual labour.

District 8 - Textiles: Pick a book with amazing clothes
The Selection trilogy by Kiera Cass. Not only are there beautiful princess-style dresses on each of the covers, America and the other Selected girls are constantly being outfitted in stunning clothes.

District 9 - Grain: Pick a book where food is hard to come by
The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa. Throughout this post-apocalyptic trilogy, Allie has to search high and low for food, ultimately costing her her life.

District 10 - Livestock: Pick a book with an animal in it
The Wolves of Mercy Falls trilogy by Maggie Stiefvater follows a pack of wolves. Well, werewolves. But that still counts!

District 11 - Agriculture: Pick a book where a character comes to a gritty, harsh reality
I'm going with Mother, Mother by Koren Zalickas for this. I can't really say who faces the harsh reality, or what it is, without giving away major spoilers. If you like psychological thrillers then definitely pick this up and find out for yourself.

District 12 - Mining: Pick a dark and sinister book
I could really pick any horror book for this, but I decided on The Walking Dead graphic novels. The constant threat of zombies is rather sinister, if you ask me, and the fact that all the comics are drawn in greyscale adds to the bleak sense of hopelessness.

  1. I had mixed feelings about MJ2. I felt like it really stayed true to the book, but the problem is that I didn't really like the book, lol!

    1. I thought it was an excellent adaptation and I think I liked it better than the book! Going in to it I had mixed feelings about the epilogue because I wasn't a fan of it in the book, but I thought it was so sweet!
