Greek Mythology Tag

Friday 22 July 2016

A while ago, I saw this tag (originally created by Flip That Page) going round quite a few blogs and decided I wanted to give it a go, seeing as I'm a fan of mythology. It took me a while, but here it finally is.

Zeus: God of the sky and thunder/king of the gods
Favorite book (choose your own category)
Cell by Stephen King. The first time I read this back in 2011 or 2012 I fell in love with it. I was new to horror and Stephen King, but it grabbed me and didn't let me go, sparking my interest in zombie books.

Poseidon: God of the seas and earthquakes
Book that drowned you in feels
Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. Achilles and Patroclus' relationship was beyond sweet; they were soulmates. They were the perfect friends and then they were the perfect couple, and then everything went wrong and the ending broke my heart.

Hades: God of the underworld
Favorite book with a dark/ominous plot
Perhaps not the most obvious choice, but We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson. The mystery surrounding Merricat and Constance was ominous, and when you learn the truth it only intensifies. Add to that the fact that they continue to live in

Hera: Goddess of marriage and family
Cutest fictional couple
America and Maxon from The Selection. They completely melted my heart and I fell in love with both of them over and over again as I read the series.

Athena: Goddess of wisdom, handicraft, and strategic warfare
Series with the best world-building
Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. I feel like it gets better and better with every book, especially in Heir of Fire. We got to see a lot more of the world, and I'm hoping this trend carries on in Queen of Shadows and the final two books.

Aphrodite: Goddess of love and beauty
Most beautiful cover on a 2016 release
Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard. While I may not have enjoyed the content of Red Queen, I can't deny that the covers for it and its sequel are beautiful in their simplicity.

Ares: God of war and bloodshed
Most violent book you’ve ever read
I'm going with Horns by Joe Hill, but really, any Stephen King book could fit this category. Honourable mentions go to Insomnia and Misery.

Hephaestus: God of blacksmiths and fire
Scorching hot swoon worthy character
Can I just go with basically everyone from A Song of Ice and Fire? Okay, a lot of the characters are morally questionable and problematic, but the casting for Game of Thrones is amazing for both talent and looks.

Artemis: Goddess of the hunt and virginity
Favorite kick-ass heroine
Katniss from The Hunger Games, Celaena from Throne of Glass, Allie from The Immortal Rules, Scarlet from The Lunar Chronicles... I could go on and on, so take your pick.

Apollo: God of light and healing
Sequel that redeemed its series
This is a tricky one. A lot of sequels from series I don't like end up being worse - in my opinion. I'm going with Catching Fire because I enjoyed it more than The Hunger Games, but I wouldn't say that it redeemed the series.

Hermes: Messenger god of thieves and commerce
Book with the best message
Again, a tricky one, although this time for the opposite reason. I read a lot of books that give good messages so I could really just pick any book off my shelf. Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson immediately springs to mind, though, as it tackles speaking up about rape and abuse - something that's extremely important, yet incredibly difficult.

Hestia: Goddess of the hearth and home
Book with the most relatable story
For me, this has to go to Am I Normal Yet? by Holly Bourne. I saw a lot of myself in Evie and felt that it captured living with OCD and anxiety almost perfectly. I had a few little issues with it, but for the most part, it really hit home.

Demeter: Goddess of fertility and agriculture
Favorite bookish setting
Any fantasy world would be ideal for me, but I'm going with the classic answer of Hogwarts from Harry Potter. Who wouldn't want to learn magic?!

Dionysus: God of wine and celebration
2016 release you are most anticipating
Heartless by Marissa Meyer. If it's anything like The Lunar Chronicles I'll love it. Although, I'll probably love it anyway, because Meyer has definitely captivated me and become one of my auto-buy authors.

  1. I haven't read that many of these - you've given me more to add to my (already horrendously large) TBR pile!

I love all of Joe Hill's books, but Horns is actually my least favourite (still uber-good though!) - probably because of the snakes being killed (it's weird that that bothers me, considering all the horror I read, but there you have it!)

    1. Yeah, I liked Heart-Shaped Box more than Horns purely because of the inclusion of snakes (my family has a history of snake phobias and I've picked up on the dislike) and the way they were controlled and killed. Same reason Pet Sematary didn't make it quite into my top King books - dead animals always get me!

  2. While I obviously didn't like the RoG series, I have to agree that the world building was actually very good! I think Maas does a great job at being descriptive. This looks like an awesome tag, especially for me because I love Greek mythology!

    1. I especially loved in in The Assassin's Blade when we got to see more of the world before the events of Throne of Glass. I'm hoping the world in ACOTAR is just as good, when I eventually get to it. I'd love to see your answers to this as well, Emily!

  3. I'm really excited to read We Have Always Lived in the Castle - I heard nothing but amazing things about it, and I haven't read any "older" horror novels before, which sucks because I love the genre.
American and Maxon are sure one of the cutest couples I've ever read about, they always make it onto my otp lists. :)
I absolutely can't wait for Heartless! I adore retellings and Marissa Meyer created such unique and outstanding stories in The Lunar Chronicles.
    Amazing post!

    1. It was only the second classic horror I'd read and I'm so glad I did because it's such an intriguing, thought-provoking read. I really hope Heartless is just as good as The Lunar Chronicles because that has one of my all time favourite teams of characters!
