November Wrap Up/December TBR

Friday 2 December 2016

November was a very good month of reading for me - I actually stuck to my TBR and read everything on it, as well as an extra.

The Heir by Kiera Cass
I didn't hate this as much the second time around, but I do still think it's completely superfluous and undoes all the good of the original series. Maxon and America aren't themselves, and how on Earth did they let Eadlyn turn into such a brat?

The Crown by Kiera Cass
I want to say I was shocked by how things ended, but when I think about it... It's exactly the type of move Cass would make. Doesn't mean I was fully expecting it and it definitely doesn't mean I liked it. You can see the dollar signs whilst reading this because it's incredibly sloppy and rushed.

Happily Ever After by Kiera Cass
Didn't hate this but also didn't love it like I did the original series. It was nice to have these snippets, but some I didn't care for or enjoy at all. And why does Cass make all of her women giggle? I don't think I've heard anyone over the age of about ten giggle, so why do all of her grown woman do it?

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
This was not at all what I was expecting. There was absolutely no science, no lightning bolts behind a Gothic castle, no one exclaiming 'it's alive!', but there was plenty of self pity, chasing each other across Europe, and story time from the monster. In short, this was incredibly boring and I do not want to write about it for my English course.

Outcast by Robert Kirkman
I really enjoyed this graphic novel - it's probably one of the best I've read this year, but I haven't read that many so that's not really hard. I've reviewed it and will be cross-posting it onto my blog in the new year, so keep your eyes peeled. Or, if you're impatient, check it out on Goodreads.

Bedlam by Nick Spencer
Again, a fantastic graphic novel with a review coming soon. Don't know why it took me so long to get to it but it was definitely worth the wait. So dark yet so thrilling, too. Definitely give it a go if you can handle darker stories.

The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
This wasn't on my original TBR, but it was going to be on my TBR for December, so I'm really glad I got to it. It was quite an odd book, and the first hundred or so pages dragged a little as things weren't explained, but it did pick up a bit towards the middle. Only to be let down by a rushed ending that still doesn't provide many answers. Overall though, I did like it. It's written well and it's incredibly thought provoking.

As for December, I don't really know what I want to read, other than fantasy. I mentioned wanting to read Uprooted before the end of the year a few months ago, and it was the most popular choice when I asked Twitter what I should read next, so hopefully I'll get to it soon. I won Kids of Appetite not too long ago so I'd like to read and review it before the end of the year. And The Wolf Wilder has been sitting on my shelf since my 19th birthday when I bought a signed copy of it down in London.

I may end up adding more to my TBR as the month goes on, especially with Christmas, but I might change my mind entirely. I'm tempted to pick up The Night Circus as well, but that's not 'official' or set in stone.

What did you read in November?
What do you want to read in December?

  1. Definitely agree with The Heir and The Crown. Although I think I was a little harsher than you and gave it one star. Why did Kiera have to take something good and turn it into this?!

    1. I think I would have given them both one star if I hadn't had the lasting joy from the original series. As bad as they are, they're still part of the Selection and I just love that so much!

  2. I really didn't like Frankenstein either when I studied it for my A Level. Victor Frankenstein is so whiny, I just couldn't get on with him!

    1. That's exactly why I didn't like him! He was like 'oh it's horrible!' but like... you created it, mate. It didn't ask for you to give it life.

  3. Still can't believe you didn't like Frankenstein! Please, at least tell me you like the Boris Karloff adaptation ;)

    1. I really wanted to but it was just so bad! I've never actually seen the original film (or any newer adaptations) but I probably wouldn't enjoy that either as black and white/old films are not my cup of tea at all.

  4. Ooh, let me know how you get on with Uprooted, and The night circus (if you read it) - I've been wanting to pick up both of them for ages but haven't gotten around to it yet lol. But the Wolf Wilder is a really emotional story. Hope you enjoy it!

    1. I'm tempted to review them when I do get to them, so keep an eye out for that! But failing that I'm sure I'll have updates on Goodreads and Twitter for both :) I hope I enjoy the Wold Wilder too, if only because it looks like it'll be sweet.
