TBR Feature #66

Wednesday 9 August 2017

TBR Feature is the chance for me to, every Wednesday, pick one of my unread books and discuss it: why I picked it up, when I'll get round to reading it, if I'm still interested in it at all etc.

One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus

This is one of those books I picked up as a way to cheer myself up. I'd just failed my Philosophy A-level by not being able to sit the second exam due to anxiety and it's safe to say I was feeling rather sorry for myself. I'd let myself down and wasted time blah, blah, blah, despite not even needing the subject for university. Queue a trip to Waterstones. (It didn't work, by the way. I'm still annoyed at myself for not going in, despite making a wise decision. But hey! I got books!)

I'd seen a lot about One of Us is Lying on Twitter so when I saw it in the buy one get one half price section (and when I realised the colour scheme matched Heartless, which I already had in my hand) I had to get it. It seems right up my alley: a dramatic thriller where I have to guess whodunit, and young adult on top of that.

Since getting this, though, I've seen a few people say it's not as good as it could have been, due to the short length of it and no real distinction between characters. I'm hoping I won't find the same faults - but I already don't have a problem with it being short, I currently have a craving for short books - and will just get wrapped up in the mystery. I just hope I don't figure it out too soon!

Have you read One of Us is Lying?

  2. I can totally relate to the exam/anxiety issue and if you feel that you made the best decision, then please don't worry!

I read this earlier on in the year and gave it 4 stars! There were definitely things that could be improved upon but I really enjoyed it :) x

    1. Thank you! My family said the exact same and are proud of me for trying anyway, so it's really just my own silly brain saying I did a bad thing haha.

Ooh, that's good to hear then! It seems like it'll be a really thrilling read so I'm hoping I enjoy it as much as you did :)

  3. Meh, f**k philosophy! (Which, if you think about it, is a philosophical statement! Lol.)

    1. But if we think about it, is it real? Is it *actually* philosophical? :P

Got a thought or an opinion? I'd love to hear it.
