TBR Feature #52

Wednesday 3 May 2017

TBR Feature is the chance for me to, every Wednesday, pick one of my unread books and discuss it: why I picked it up, when I'll get round to reading it, if I'm still interested in it at all etc.

Tithe by Holly Black

There was a time, however brief it may have been, when I considered Holly Black one of my favourite authors and vowed to read all of her books. I bought myself quite a few - Doll Bones, The Coldest Girl in Coldtown, the entire Modern Faerie Tales series, The Darkest Part of the Forest. I was excited to read them all. And then I actually read some of them...

Don't get me wrong, Black knows how to write whimsical children's books and I'm in awe of her knowledge regarding fey folklore, I just don't seem to get on with her young adult stuff. I love how she writes fairies in a more traditional sense - think less glitter and fluttery wings and more sharp teeth and cunning tricks - but her human characters are all cut from the same cloth and always fall short for me. They're all brash teenagers who love to party and absent adults, and I'm so sick of seeing that in books.

Hopefully Tithe will be a bit different and I'll end up pleasantly surprised by it, but I'm not holding my breath. It will no doubt end up being more of the same: disappointing, long-winded, cliche young adult fantasy.

Have you read Tithe?

    1. The covers for the sequels are too, which makes me hopeful it's a decent fey series :)

Got a thought or an opinion? I'd love to hear it.
