TBR Feature #70

Wednesday 6 September 2017

TBR Feature is the chance for me to, every Wednesday, pick one of my unread books and discuss it: why I picked it up, when I'll get round to reading it, if I'm still interested in it at all etc.

A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas

In case you didn't see Monday's review for A Court of Thorns and Roses - aka the prequel to A Court of Mist and Fury - I'll sum up my feelings on it for you: I hated it.

With that in mind, you're probably wondering why I still own this. Right? Right. Cue an anecdote: The third book in this series, A Court of Wings and Ruin, was being released. I had some money. I pre-ordered it to complete my set. I thought 'now's the time to finally read ACOTAR because I can marathon the series!' I read ACOTAR. I thought I'd love ACOTAR. I hated ACOTAR. But I am an idiot. I struggle to leave series unfinished if I own the books and also struggling getting rid of books. So. Here we are.

I have heard that things get more action packed and thrilling in ACOMAF, but I've also heard that the borderline pornographic scenes get worse, and I'm not here to read that. And I'm certainly not supportive of the main (abusive) relationship. Yet I still plan on reading this to find out what happens for myself. Ridiculous, as I know that I won't like this, but there's still a little flicker of hope within me.

Have you read A Court of Mist and Fury?

  1. ACOMAF is my favourite of the trilogy - I didn't really enjoy either ACOTAR or ACOWAR but this one really sucked me in and gave me somewhere to escape to when I needed it and it's the only one that I go back to. The sex scenes are a bit much, but you can just skip those. I definitely agree that it's more action-packed and thrilling than ACOTAR. Obviously, it's still flawed (hellooo anything written by SJM) and the writing isn't perfect (but is still way better than in ACOWAR I found) but I'd still give it a go if I were you. I think a lot of people have a similar experience to you in that they hated ACOTAR but enjoyed ACOMAF.

    1. Thanks for your insight, Zoe! I do think I'll get to it in the next month or so as I really want to know what happens at the minute haha. And I mind end up pleasantly surprised, so who knows?!
