Book Talk: Organisation

Friday 21 August 2015

I'm one of those people that likes their books displayed in a very specific way. Grouped by genre, alphabetical by author's last name within those genres. No double stacking, spines out, pushed right to the back of the shelf.

I get easily annoyed when things don't fit the way I want them too. When an author has written for more than one genre and I have to split their work. When all the books on one shelf aren't the same height. When a series swaps from paperback to hardback half way through.

To me, organising and cataloging my books is half the fun of being a book worm. I love seeing my collection together, seeing the variety of genres and authors I've read. I love being able to look at my shelves and think 'that book was amazing' and 'that one wasn't so great, but it made me think'. I love having my own little library.

I'm always interested to see how other people organise their books. I like to see what we have in common - in both reading taste and storage. Sometimes it can be quite telling about a person's overall character and that's part of the fun for me. Do tidy shelves equal an organised person? Or just someone who likes to showcase their belongings in a nice way. Do books stacked haphazardly mean someone is messy? Or do they just enjoy being surrounded by the things they love?

It's an interesting thing - to me, anyway.

  1. I don't really have a "organizational method" that I use on purpose to order by books. I just group them by height since my shelves are different heights themselves... and despite the lack of organized method, I would definitely call myself an organised person! :)

    1. We had to do that on our old shelves, but it drove me mad! Do you organise other things at all? I know I order my pencil cases as well as my bookshelves. :)

  2. Unfortunately, I can't say I'm the most organized of people (and yes, I'm ashamed!). Recently, however, I've been organizing my shelves alphabetically by author's last name. Nothing fancy, I know, but at least it's organized! :-)

    1. I think that's a very good way to start with things, especially if you aren't sure how you want things to be organised. Sometimes, playing around with methods can spark new ideas. :)

  3. Same here. I guess that's why I enjoy watching bookshelf tours on YouTube. Unfortunately, I don't have the luxury of organizing my books the way I want at the moment since I'm limited to one over-stuffed bookcase but if I did, they would be organized according to genre and series would be grouped together. It wouldn't be double-stacked (as it is now) and it wouldn't be in alphabetical order either.

    1. I hope you get more shelves because it sounds like you've got a great plan in mind! I love bookshelf tours as well, and that's the only reason I'd ever really make a booktube channel because doing them on a blog is hard. :(

Got a thought or an opinion? I'd love to hear it.
