Coffee Book Tag

Friday 21 October 2016

I've see a lot of booktubers doing this tag lately and wanted to give it a go. It was originally created by BangadyBangz on Youtube, so be sure to check it out!

Black: Name a series that's tough to get into but has hardcore fans
The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare. I tried, I really did. I read all six books, as well as The Infernal Devices. I watched the film and I'm currently giving the Netflix series a go. Try as I might I just do not like the Shadowhunter world and cannot get my head around why so many people love it so much.

Peppermint mocha: Name a book that gets more popular during the winter or a festive time of year
Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater. Not only is it set around the Christmas period, but Mercy Falls is covered in snow and the cooler temperatures play a big part in the story. Plus, it's a painfully cringey romance, and I feel like everyone enjoys that in winter.

Hot chocolate: What is your favourite children's book?
Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan. I love all of Rick Riordan's Greek myth books, but they are a little young for me, I'll admit. I can see the flaws in them but they're just so darn fun I can't stop reading them.

Double espresso: Name a book that kept you on the edge of your seat from start to finish
The Creeper Man by Dawn Kurtagich. It was just the right amount of weird to keep me interested without alienating me, and the twists and turns threw me every time. I was a tad disappointed with the ending - I wanted something more unique and less happy - but that didn't stop me from being hooked until the very last page.

Starbucks: Name a book you see everywhere
Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. Especially with the release of Empire of Storms not being too long ago. Unfortunately, I've been seeing it receive more negative attention than positive, due to the direction the story has taken, which has made me rather hesitant about finishing the series.

That hipster coffee shop: Give a book by an indie author a shout out
Aiki Flinthart and the 80AD series. I read these years ago and they reminded me very strongly of Percy Jackson, but they were still extremely unique. Each book takes you to a different ancient civilisation to explore their myths and folklore, all through a computer game. Would definitely recommend giving them a go.

Oops! I accidentally got decaf: Name a book you were expecting more from
Read Me Like a Book by Liz Kessler. The synopsis of this promises a coming out story and what sounds like a student-teacher relationship. Risky. Taboo. Diverse. All things I look for in a good book. It did not deliver at all, and felt more like a long complaint from the insufferable main character. Things were touched upon, but they weren't the main parts of the story like I expected.

The perfect blend: Name a book or series that was both bitter and sweet but ultimately satisfying
The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa. Mainly the second book, but the first book was also very bitter in how it started. The entire series had me feeling both happy and sad though, as it roller coasters through many different situations and their appropriate emotions. Things ended nicely, though, so overall it was extremely satisfying.

  1. I totally agree with The Mortal Instruments! I found it so hard to like but that fandom is insane! I wish I could be apart of it :(

    1. I feel like it can be very negative and hostile towards people who didn't like the series, which makes me so angry. You're allowed to like different things!

  2. I'm not to fangirl levels with The Mortal Instruments - but the fanfiction-style insanity of it all makes it pretty addictive! It's kind of like pixie-sticks in book form ;)

Shiver (sigh) I always want to punch the parents in that book. Your teenager is hiding a wolfboy in her room. And not just for a night. This goes on for a while. How the hell do you not notice?!?!

I really want to read Read Me Like a Book :/ kind of worried now!

    1. The Mortal Instruments just completely turned me off because I just couldn't stand any part of it as it kept dragging on and on. I own the Bane Chronicles though, and I'm hoping I at least like parts of that.

I find that absent parents is a massive theme in YA. They just... don't exist. And when they do they don't interfere? In cases like The Hunger Games where the main character is away from home it's understandable, but then they live with and talk to their parents every chapter?

I have a review for Read Me Like a Book on Goodreads that hasn't made it across to my blog yet, if you're interested.

    2. Welp, Magnus Bane is a Sass Lord so you'll probs. like it! :)

I know - it's like dude, how stupid are you?!?! SHE HAS A WOLFBOY IN HER ROOM.

Ooh, I'll have to check it out!

  3. I love this tag. I totally agree with The Mortal Instruments, I like them but I crazy love them. It took me so long to get through them, I felt like the chapters were a wee bit too long for my liking. I really like City of Bones but after that it kind of dragged for me.

    1. Yes! The chapters felt like entire books themselves and they were too repetitive for me. It really should have stopped at City of Glass, if you ask me.

  4. I've wanted to read The Immortal Rules for a long time, but at the same time I don't know if it would by my style, which is why I haven't picked it up.
As for The Mortal Instruments, I loved the first 3 books and grew weary with the other 3. It's just not for everyone. Great tag!

    1. If you like post-apocalyptic and dystopian settings (and vampires) then you should have no problem with it! It's not a standard cutesy YA vampire story though, it really highlights have vampires are monsters.
That's how I felt about TMI too - the last three books were the worst.

  6. oh I'm the same about Throne of Glass! Endlessly annoyed at the direction that's gone honestly. *cries* I used to like it but now I'm just annoyed. :P I DO, however, adore Cassandra Clare, Rick Riordan, and Maggie Stiefvater's books.😂 I didn't actually realise Shiver was set around chrismtas haha DUH TO ME. I am obviously due for a re-read. ;)

Thanks for stopping by @ Paper Fury!

  7. I really like the sound of this tag! I'm an avid lover of the Shadowhunter world but if it isn't for you, then it isn't for you. It's good that you tried so hard to make it work but I guess at some point you just have to let bygones be bygones. But there is one book which I couldn't stand and hated with everything in me - which was Shiver. It was so cringey and just so... bland. I can't believe so many people like it! I loved Percy Jackson too though! Those books will always be epic <3
