Bookmarks vs Dog-earing

Friday 19 February 2016

Perhaps the name of my blog gives it away a little, but I'm a fan of bookmarks.

I'd never dream of dog-earing, or turning down the corners of pages, unless absolutely necessary - and even then, I'd rather lose my page. If I don't have a proper bookmark to hand I'll use whatever I can: sticky notes, old receipts, hair bobbles, my finger, even my phone.

I am of the opinion that, yes, books are to be read, just not to within an inch of their lives and battered in the process. Why would you bend a page - and continue to do so as you progress through the story - when you can very easily grab a scrap to save your place? Why would you defile a book when there are gorgeous bookmarks out there? Why wouldn't you want a collection of bookmarks to choose from every time you start a new book?

The very purpose of a bookmark is to mark a place in a book, so what on earth could possess you not to use them?!

Not only do they serve as a reminder of where we have come to in a story, they remind us of places we've visited, people we've met, and things we don't want to forget. I have a Slytherin bookmark from the Harry Potter Studio Tours; I have one from Alnwick castle, given to me by my mum; I have one from my library, advertising the summer volunteer programme I took part in.

I don't just have bookmarks; I have a jar full of stories. What more could a reader want?

  1. Such pretty bookmarks! I tend to misplace a lot of the paper ones but I have some Harry Potter ones that are too precious to lose.

    1. Thanks! I have an old candle jar that I keep all of mine in (the ones in the picture aren't even all of them - just the ones I could grab easily). I like being able to choose a bookmark that matches the colour/publisher/genre of the book I'm reading haha.

  2. I love bookmarks, and I have a few of them, but for some reason I tend to grab the same one over and over again. I finish a book and then grab the next one and just use the same bookmark. I love the ones that the Book Depository puts out, but I tend to use the magnetic ones a lot.

    1. I don't actually own any magnetic ones but I know there are lots of different designs on Etsy that I like! I have quite the collection of Book Depository ones as well, and I tend to use them in whichever book they came with.

  3. You had me frightened there for a moment when I saw the title - I totally thought you'd say dog earing is fine, which is NOT. I have quite a few bookmarks, but I don't always have one with me so, like you, sometimes I use whatever object I can find - mostly tissues, though.
Great post and I LOVE your bookmarks, especially the My True Love Gave To Me One. Where did you get it? :)

    1. Oh gosh, sorry to worry you! Dog-earing is a crime, if you ask me! I usually only have one on me if I've brought along a book I'm already in the process of reading, so new books just get their receipt. Maybe I should keep a bookmark in my bag...
If I remember correctly, I got the My True Love Gave to Me one from YALC in 2014. I think I actually have a few of them because people kept handing lots of different ones out!
