TBR Feature #56

Wednesday, 31 May 2017

TBR Feature is the chance for me to, every Wednesday, pick one of my unread books and discuss it: why I picked it up, when I'll get round to reading it, if I'm still interested in it at all etc.

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas

This is one of those books that I feel really out of the loop on because it seems like everyone and their mother has read it. You can't do anything on Twitter without seeing this book pop up at least once, and I want to know what all the fuss is about.

I don't really go in for contemporary books that much, but from what I've heard this should be a contemporary that's more up my alley. Rather than romance, it seems that THUG tackles much more realistic and important topics. I know that the Black Lives Matter movement is addressed throughout the story, and I'm interested to see what it has to say on the subject. From what I've heard from others, though, it seems to hit the nail pretty squarely on the head.

The only hang up I have that's prevented me from picking this up is that I'm just not in the mood for it yet. The burning urge to be in on it dissipated once I bought a copy for myself, so I couldn't say when I'll get to it. Hopefully before the year is out, but we'll see.

Have you read The Hate U Give?

  1. I finished this recently, and I loved it. I'm not usually one for contemporary and I haven't read much YA recently, so I was a bit worried but I also couldn't deal with everyone talking about it and not knowing! I picked it up and it had so much going on which I enjoyed, like the family dynamics and also the race discourse, but also the Harry Potter references. I just thought it was brilliant!

    1. Ooh, hopefully I'll love it too then! The prospect of good family values has be intrigued, as I find they're so often overlooked in YA. Glad you enjoyed it, Zoe!

  2. I hope you enjoy this!! It's one of those hyped up books that is honestly worth the hype, because whatever you think of it, the overall theme is still so important.

    1. That's very true! I'm sure even if I don't like the story itself I'll still come away from it all the better, as it's so topical to today's society.
