Recommendations: Contemporary

Friday 15 May 2015

Shift by Em Bailey
Laced with paranormal aspects, this story touches on friendship, music, and illness in a tactful and interesting way. Thoroughly unputdownable, it's a must read for those transitioning from fantasy to contemporary.

Bunheads by Sophie Flack
Perhaps better suited to dedicated followers of ballet, Flack weaves a tale of one girl's dedication and sacrifice for her hobby. With interesting and appealing characters, you'll enjoy it even if you don't understand all of the terminology.

This Song Will Save Your Life by Leila Sales
More of a standard contemporary, this focuses on romance more heavily, as well as love for hobby like Bunheads. However, there are strong lessons on the value of friendship, family, and being true to oneself.

  3. YA contemporary isn't a genre that I'm very well read in, aside from John Green, so these three books do interest me, especially Bunheads. To be honest I know nothing about ballet, but I always enjoy stories about people pushing themselves to extremes to achieve greatness in whatever field they love. That was what made Whiplash, the movie that came out last year, so brilliant for me. While I doubt Bunheads will be able to compare to Whiplash, which really blew me away, it does look very interesting and I'll add it to my (incredibly long) list of books I mean to read. Thanks for the recommendation!

    1. I must say, all three of these books are very different to Green's work. I'm not a fan of his books, so I enjoyed these a lot more, but his had more of an element of humour (albeit badly done, awkward humour - in my opinion, of course). Bunheads also has elements of friendship and the struggle of work/life balance, which I really liked. Some of the terms can be looked up, which I found useful (as my childhood ballet lessons have completely left my brain, ha). I've heard nothing but good about Whiplash, so I think I'll have to get round to watching it. Thanks for recommending it!

    1. Thank you so much, I don't mind at all! I'll be sure to post it soon.

I think even if I didn't enjoy the stories I would have recommend them anyway purely for the covers, haha. :)

  5. I've never really delved into the contemporary genre before so this post was very much needed! Your recommendations seem super solid and I've heard great things about every title, especially This Song Will Save Your Life.

    1. Glad I could help! I, too, haven't delved deeply into the genre, but these are true gems. This Song Will Save Your Life is probably my favourite of the three, and it was very surprising! You're more than welcome and I hope you enjoy them if you pick them up. ^_^
