June Wrap Up

Friday, 1 July 2016

June was a rather slow reading month for me, as I spent a lot of it slogging through The Maze Runner series. Things did pick up at the end of the month, though, when I read the mysterious Hodder ARC and started Mr Mercedes by Stephen King.

The Scorch Trials by James Dashner
I had high hopes for the rest of the series after I finished The Maze Runner, but I was let down. The Scorch Trials was a bit of a roller coaster - but not an exciting one. It started off well, then became boring, then as it started to pick up again it became so confusing it was no longer enjoyable.

The Death Cure by James Dashner
Things continued much in the same vein with The Death Cure which was a very weak end to the trilogy. I can't remember much from this, which is probably a good thing because I didn't like it. At all.

The Kill Order by James Dashner
If I didn't have the compulsion to give star ratings on Goodreads all the time, this would have received no stars. I have nothing good to say about this addition to the series because it's just so bad and completely superfluous.

Can You #ReadWithoutPrejudice?
Thankfully, this title was approved for me on NetGalley soon after I finished with The Kill Order, and it couldn't have come about at a better time. My full review can be found here, but overall I really liked this as yet untitled work. Very topical to today's society and gripping, especially if you're a fan of crime dramas.

What did you read in June?

  1. Definitely agree with the Scortch Trials. I'm actually pretty sure I dnf'ed it because I just wasn't feeling it. I liked The Maze Runner though.

    1. I'm really disappointed with the series as a hole because I liked the Maze Runner. I gave it the benefit of the doubt because I owned all of them and forced my way through them. Never again. Really wish I hadn't bothered.

  3. i've never tried reading the Mazer Runner series! It's never really appealed to me. I think that the only dystopian books that I've enjoyed has been THG & The Selection. I'm sorry that you didn't like most of what you read /:

    1. I only gave it a go because I liked the film! THG and The Selection are probably the only dystopians I've enjoyed, too. Guess it's just not the genre for us. Hopefully July will be a much better month for me!

  4. I'm not finishing The Maze Runner series for this exact reason. I left it way too long between books, and The Scorch Trials let me down...and now I don't even want to get the last two books. I've just completely gone off the series. It's a shame you didn't enjoy them though, since they took up the majority of your month!
The read without prejudice books are really intriguing to me. I've not gotten one myself, but I want to know what going on with them all haha!

    1. I was so disappointed by The Scorch Trials because it could have been just as good as The Maze Runner. Can't exactly put my finger on what went wrong but I would not recommend finishing it. I was just determined to finish the series though! I'd say the read without prejudice book is definitely worth the wait for the final copy! Wasn't expecting it to take such a dramatic turn but I'm glad it did because it made me enjoy it a lot more.
