TBR Feature #12

Wednesday 13 July 2016

TBR Feature is the chance for me to, every Wednesday, pick one of my unread books and discuss it: why I picked it up, when I'll get round to reading it, if I'm still interested in it at all etc.

The Iron Trial by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare

I made the mistake of buying The Iron Trial before I'd finished reading The Mortal Instruments and realised that I don't actually like Cassandra Clare's writing. As much as I do enjoy Holly Black's work, I'm very hesitant about picking this up.

I have no idea whose voice will come across most, or how the co-write was approached; did that write alternate chapters? Take on specific characters? I really don't want Clare's style to be the prominent one of the pair.

I've also heard very mixed things in regards to the similarities between this and Harry Potter. While I am a big fan of Harry Potter, I'm also a fan of original ideas. I'd like to think that this can stand on its own two feet, but I know what Cassandra Clare is like.

Have you read The Iron Trial?

  1. This is on my (epically long) TBR too - I've never actually read anything by Holly Black, but I quite like Cassandra Clare.

    1. Holly Black is much better, in my opinion! She reminds me more of old-timey fantasy, with a heavy focus on fairies and folklore. Definitely worth giving her a shot!

  2. I'm not a fan of Cassandra Claire at all. I don't think I could put it aside to read it even though I've adored everything I've read by holly black. I just can't get into the idea of spending time on an author that I really, really dislike.

    1. Yeah, that's what's holding me back as well. If Holly Black had written it on her own I'd probably have already read it by now, but after reading City of Heavenly Fire I don't want to give Clare the time of day.

Got a thought or an opinion? I'd love to hear it.
